Haxey Hood
6 January
Haxey Hood is a strange game played out on 6 January each year on a
field between the towns of Haxey and Westwoodside in North Lincolnshire,
England. Each team tries to get the hood (usually a piece of rolled
canvas or leather) to their own pub. What happens is a huge ruck and
scrimmage with however many people have bothered to turn up to play for
either side. The game doesn't really have any rules - although women and
children don't usually play - or a time limit.
