World Pooh Sticks Championships
March - Date to be confirmed
mid March
Day's Lock, near Dorchester
A couple of thousand people turn up each year to watch twigs float down the Thames at Day's Lock, near Little Wittenham. In the past competitors have come from far-distant countries.
Competitors drop marked sticks into the water from the twin bridges over the Thames and see whose emerges first on the other site of the bridge.
It's free to watch, but there's a token fee for participants which goes
to charities including, bizarrely, the Royal National Lifeboat
Institution. It's organised by the
Sinodun Rotary Club.
